Environmental assessments of materials and equipment are conducted during the reconstruction or demolition of buildings and structures to identify hazardous substances (e.g., asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls, petroleum products, heavy metals, etc.) that may pose health risks to personnel and the public. These assessments may also be performed as part of ongoing operations at industrial facilities.

Particular attention is given to the detection of dust-generating materials – such as asbestos-containing materials, synthetic mineral fibres, old paints – and substances with high migration potential (e.g., oils, impregnation agents, fuel residues). These assessments help determine risks related to the disposal of construction materials or their placement at waste disposal sites during demolition.

The process typically includes:

  • Visual inspection of the site;
  • Review of design and operational documentation;
  • Sampling of materials followed by laboratory analysis.

Based on the findings, the quantity and storage locations of hazardous materials are assessed, as well as the risks associated with their current or potential future use and disposal. Recommendations are then developed for safe use, handling, storage, replacement, or removal of such materials.

Our company also conducts risk assessments related to the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at industrial sites. These substances are considered persistent, hazardous, and difficult-to-remove pollutants. The assessment includes:

  • Characterization of exposure conditions;
  • Identification of migration pathways and exposure scenarios;
  • Estimation of the magnitude, frequency, and duration of potential human exposure to PFAS in the environment.

In addition, our consultants provide oversight for the safe dismantling of structures containing hazardous substances, ensuring full compliance with international standards and good practice in environmental health and safety.
