Background environmental and socio-economic studies of two operated coal deposits in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)

Our consultants completed background environmental and socio-economic studies of two operated coal deposits in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on behalf of Kolmar Company.

The scope included a complex of observations of all components of the environment with sampling of soil, water and air, as well as an assessment of the visual amenity of landscapes, with the preparation of description and maps. Reliability of field observations that started in the beginning of the winter period was limited to the established snow cover. Laboratory tests of samples were performed by a subcontractor.

Within the framework of socio-economic research, a number of meetings were held with representatives of local and district administrations, hunters and indigenous peoples (Evenks). Traditional land use practices in the project region, transport risks, labor relations and public safety risks were studied. Consultations were held with the project’s stakeholders.

The results of these background studies are discussed in the ESIA scoping report the ESIA report.
